A FEW WORDS

MELBOURNE POWER-POPPERS, HEXHAM HEADS, RELEASE DEBUT SINGLE SAY IT AGAIN.

Storming out of Melbourne, Australia, are 4 piece rockers, HEXHAM HEADS- a ‘supergroup’ of sorts, who already have people talking! The band offer a new take on a classic power pop sound, delivered with a raggedy, no-nonsense approach.

The brainchild of Van Walker (Swedish Magazines/Livingstone Daisies & prolific solo artist) and Mic Hubbard (Spencer P. Jones/Ella Hooper/Downhills Home), HEXHAM HEADS was formed out of a love of loud guitars and hooky pop melodies, with Walker handling most of the songwriting and Hubbard on recording and production duties.

The two began recording some rough demos at Hubbard’s ‘Shrimp Shack’ studio in the Winter of 2024, crafting arrangements and defining the general sound of the project. Before too long, they enlisted their dream rhythm section of Brett ‘Wolfie’ Wolfenden (The Pictures/The Casanovas/Wolfmother) on drums and George Carroll Wilson (Pollyman/Bones and Jones) on bass guitar to join in the proceedings, and in one short, action-packed session they recorded four songs that would become their debut, self-titled EP, due for release on Cheersquad Records & Tapes on 21 February 2025.

‘Say It Again’ is the first offering from this session and the excitement and energy of a fresh, new project is clearly captured in the recording. It’s obvious that each member is an accomplished musician in their own right, and these years of experience combined, make for something truly special.

The high-vibing debut single is one of the rare love songs that’s equal parts harmony and heft, with a nod to classic power-pop groups like Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Big Star, and the rock guitar-monies of Thin Lizzy. Its tight vocal arrangements, chiming 12-string guitar and soul-inspired, double-time drums evoke a sound that’s nostalgic, yet something new altogether. Lyrically, the song is inspired by the love of life, living large, and shouting it to the heavens. A lover’s plea, and a promise that there’s still time to “make you happy”. Lead vocalist and songwriter Van Walker says: “One should never promise anyone happiness, but in the heat of the moment these promises are made!”

The single is accompanied by a killer video and features the group playing amongst shimmering mirrorball reflections and a haze of smoke, in a disused reception hall located underneath the studio where the song was recorded. The clip showcases the lively performance Hexham Heads will soon become known for. One fan’s review of the new video exclaimed: “Wow! This song is catchier than a keeper’s mit! This is gonna be the feel good hit of the summer!”

HEXHAM HEADS are thrilled to launch the new project and play to new audiences in 2025, with an already large repertoire of original material, which will produce a full-length album later in the year.

‘Say It Again’ is a small taste of things to come from the new group, a testament to their catchy songwriting and powerful performances, marrying the jangle of a 12-string with the snarl of a Marshall amplifier. It’s hooks-a-plenty, guitars galore, and an homage to loud, sweaty, unadulterated fun.

Say It Again is out on all streaming platforms on January 23, 2025 via Cheersquad Records & Tapes.
